Tugboat
Song Review
..Is And Shall Be
A great song, should have been a hit! I remember playing on this in Glasgow.
This cut isn't too different from the version we did.Maybe a little faster.
Play the Part
I like it. Nice country vibe, cool guitar parts, nice loose drumming.
Smelly Ears
Unusual title! I particularly like the backwards guitar part, kind of
MBV meets Pixies..?
Underground
I REALLY like this. Lovely guitar part, gorgeous melody, kind of Felt
drumming. A great wee song by Michael I think..?Maybe could have went
on a bit longer, just because it's so nice..?
Not Going Anywhere
I think we did this in Glasgow and it was called "The Longest Winter".
I think that keyboard melody was played on guitar and it had bass and
drums. I liked this song back in '91 and still do today. Weird organ sound!
Cold Night
A lot more rocking than the original, and I particularly like the drumming
on this version. I love the 500!
Matters
Kind of restrained, I particularly like the riff that comes in after each
verse, that seems to replace a chorus. Funnily enough reminds me of the
solo stuff of James Iha who played in the Smashing Pumpkins?!
Uptight
Doesn't really sound how I remember "Undone" Love this. The
slide guitar at the start is great. Again a bit of a MBV sound on the
guitars and drums. Really cool guitar tones. The guitar playing on this
is a lot different from Change Seasons stuff. A lot less intricate and
melodic, and more based on sound and texture. A departure I like a lot.
A bit of a "Wall Of Sound".
Crash & Burn
This one reminds me a bit of "You're living All Over Me" era
Dinosaur Jr.Like the bass line on this one, it has a bit of a Lou Barlow
thing happening, I think.
Up & Down
Is this the tune you don't like? I really think this one is great. Like
the time changes and drumming, and that bending, semitone guitar part.I
think the riff at the end is great, kind of blurred and implied guitar
playing. You know, you're not sure whether you're just imagining a melody
or not, that I really like. I suppose the end was becoming a bit of a
Neil and Crazy Horse workout..?!
Papercuts
Is this you or is it Michael singing? Really love this one. It's got a
menacing quality, and taut feel that reminds of the vibe on Slint's "Spiderland"
record. Were you a fan of that album? The Most stripped back guitar playing
that I think I've heard you and Michael do. More playing as one, rather
than a rhythm and a melody part.
It's fascinating for me to hear this, as I've often wondered what you
guys would have done next.
Cliff Henderson, 2004.
