Song review from Cliff Henderson

"Tugboat is a gem of a reissue from Egg Records. Egg was active as a label from 1988-1991. They have recently begun reissuing their old vinyl-only releases and have extended the offer to other bands from the era under the moniker Egg Records Restoration Programme. So far they've put out 15 CDs including a compilation of highlights. Tugboat was apparently a Toronto band. I was unaware of them at the time but it's nice to discover them now, 15 years later. Their sound takes me back to those good old days of indie rock. A simpler time, before the millions of sub-sub-genres had split off into their factions.
The first song, ...is and shall be, reminds me of another Toronto band from the era Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. But for the remainder of the album Tugboat reminds me of a lot of Bruiser, the first Eggs album; whispery vocals, clean pretty guitars and jangly ride cymbals. Other writers have compared Tugboat to Galaxie 500, Cannanes and The Pastels. Comparison could also be drawn to Pavement, Haywood, and other indie-rock bands from that era." - Left Hip

"This lo-fi surprise comes from Weston, Toronto via Germany on the Pop Goes On Label. Its incredible that stuff like this has to come from across the ocean seeing as its so good that not only should you write to them and buy it but also put out another records for them. Tugboats EP owes more than a dollar to The Cannanes, The Pastels, Galaxie 500 (whose debut 45 they name themselves after). The 5 songs crammed on this 7" are diverse enough that of you don't dig the barely-a-sketch-of-song organ number "Not Going Anywhere" then the Crazy Horse like "Play the Part" will be sure to satisfy. A swell experience all round that sounds like summer"
